Which book have you read more than any other?
My answer would be the Christian Bible. Since 1968 after given a Lexicon by the church, I consult some kind of Lexicon, now mostly on line to dig deeper into the original meaning of words as the audience might have understood it.
The question sparks an interesting idea, though. Could multiple readings of any book be beneficial? One of the fascinating aspects of multiple readings of the Bible is that you find something there you didn’t discover before. I am sure a more highly trained and intelligent thinker could explain this phenomenon. There’s probably a scientific or technical label for it.
The more thought I press into this; the more I believe it would be true. I am sure one’s experiences and maturity which occurs between one reading and another rereading of a verse, chapter, portion, book affects the understanding each time.
Possibly, the motivation for the interest in reading a certain book dictates the effect it has on the reader. For that reason alone, multiple readings of any book may be beneficial. Reading for enjoyment and entertainment may satisfy one need. An experienced or gifted reader may also become more self-aware, gain knowledge, or be spiritually changed. A second reading may provide even more insight in one or more of these layers of humanity.
I’m hoping any or all of anything I wrote will fascinate someone enough to spark a rereading. When it does, opportunity for entertainment or knowledge or spiritual growth happens.
