Christian Convictions

The post reads: “No, I will not be watching the Super Bowl. Yes, I will be following stats and watch Turning Point USA Halftime Show. Is my duty as a Christian. NFL is using an advocate of Lucifer on their Halftime Show. Two young quarterbacks going head to head. Should be a good game. Shame on you NFL.”

My response: “If you feel convicted, then no you should not watch. But it is not your duty as a Christian to curse the NFL. Yes, curse, that is what you’re doing when you shame someone. We are to bless and not curse. Isn’t that what we have been commanded to do as Christians?”

The verse reads:

“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭12‬:‭14‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Breaking it down:

“NFL is using an advocate of Lucifer….” There is no direct evidence that Bad Bunny, the halftime artist advocates for Lucifer. Some people interpret his lyrics, costumes, and imagery as satanic in nature. I do not know enough of his music or himself as an artist to agree or disagree. What I have read about the artist does not align with the poster’s view.

The statement in italics above from the post not only curses the NFL, but also Bad Bunny. Matthew and Luke record Christ’s teaching on judging another’s heart. I will use a portion of one of the records here as a reminder of our duty as a Christian.

““Do not judge, or you too will be judged.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭1‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Freedom of Speech

The poster has every right to express their opinion. Legally, the poster can judge the NFL, Bad Bunny, even my faith. I am not a lawyer, but I believe this is true. My argument is not an advocacy for nor against the poster’s plans for the halftime show. Neither am I making a judgement about the poster’s opinion of the NFL and Bad Bunny.

Is my duty as a Christian

What I am addressing is the comment that what the poster is doing is somehow a duty as a Christian. I do not agree. What I understand as my duty as a Christian is to grow more and more spiritually minded and less and less my carnal self.

If being entertained by a secular artist during the halftime show of the Super Bowl will hinder the poster from accomplishing that, then I support the decision to not watch it. That is the poster’s prerogative.

It is a personal preference. I believe the poster’s opinion is based on biased unjustified information, but that’s my opinion. It is also my opinion that personal convictions of Christians are better stated as such without slanderous accusations because our duty as a Christian is to exemplify the grace of God.

If watching Turning Point USA is going to draw the poster closer to God, then the poster would have done the readers a better service to promote that than slander the Apple Music sponsored one.
