What do you listen to while you work?
I enjoy listening to music anytime – while I’m eating my PB&J snack, for example. Of course, while I do yard work, while I draw or paint, clean house, exercise, or do other physical tasks, I like to listen to music.
While I’m writing, I prefer as little distraction as possible. This includes music most of the time. On occasion, I will play music. Yet, music influences my writing. Each chapter of my novel Through the Valley of the Shadow, for example, is also the title of a song whose lyrics parallel the chapter’s storyline.
The genre of music depends on my mood. When I need motivated to actually get up and do something, meet a deadline, or accomplish a goal, I usually rely on the rock music of my youth. If needing strength beyond my human spirit or a good dose of hopefulness, I listen to more contemporary Christian music. Sometimes, it isn’t necessarily to fulfill a need or desire, the choice of genre just fits my current mood whatever that may be.
So here we go. I poke the blue tooth bud in my ear, pull up “Lauren Daigle Radio“ on the Pandora app on my iPhone, and head out in this 7:30 am Monday morning heat and humidity to hopefully complete the mowing and trimming of the yard and as many of the unfinished outdoor tasks I can before this wrecked old body cannot take it anymore.
