On the Patio

A cool summer-like breeze wafts over me. A toad hops up to join me. The sun rolls by on its way further west. Two lilies continue to expose a little more of their beauty. Some songbirds sneak behind me quietly to partake of the seed in the bird feeder. They don’t realize I’m the one who put it there. A small pale butterfly flutters an up and down flight pattern right across my patio where I sit, legs crossed sipping a cherry Dr. Pepper.

I initially left any art pad, notebook, or cellphone inside the house, out of reach, out of mind. I’m shoeless so I won’t wander off. I’m sure there’s traffic. There’s always lots of traffic on this city street only a block away from a UPS terminal. I refuse to hear it.

David Muir, one of my favorite anchors shares the news inside, but tonight he does it without me. I’m sure it’s okay with him. He doesn’t even know me. I’m trying not to think about wars, storms, politics, trials, shootings, etc. at least for a few minutes. My to-do lists, my personal problems, my prayer list, I’ve tucked them away for a moment to let God do his part with them as He works them in with all the world issues David Muir discusses.

I remain quiet. I am only one of the many lives around me. It feels good. I’m in good company. We share no opinions. We share only this moment. God encourages it by allowing it to continue. I think He planted the idea in my head.

It was my greatest accomplishment of the day – a complete and total act of faith that brings a peace that surpasses human understanding.

I have the rich life full of a sinner wounded by misunderstanding and punishment but blessed by mercy and forgiveness.
