I would like to say I have always understood and lived by this Biblical quote, but I can’t. Like many of us in the Bible Belt, questioning the church cultural values feels disloyal to God, but very often those values were the result of human wisdom based on the known information of the time. It is not unfaithful, but as the verse says rethinking it in accordance with the Word of God is a way to approve God’s will.

I believe the idea of renewing our minds or rethinking personal cultural norms is very relevant today. We can get so well adjusted to our own culture that we believe there is no other way. It blinds us to facts and to understanding other cultures.
