I walk out to the deck of a mountain cabin. There is Jesus looking out across the mountain range that surrounds us. I lean against the railing next to him. I look up and catch a gleam of wonder in his eyes.
I track the line of his sight out beyond the range and there we see a blaze of golden sunset contrasts against the darkening sky above it.
“What’s on your mind?” I ask him as he continues to stare out upon the horizon.
Jesus sighs,”One of my favorite works of art.”
We watch in silence as the sun disappears behind the vastness of mountains and timberland and eventually the horizon.
Darkness is all around but there is just enough light from stars and a small sliver of moon that we can make out the silhouettes of trees and mountain tops.
Jesus continues to take it all in with a twinkle in his eye.
Slowly, he turns to me,”What’s on your mind?”
“I’m reminded of something you’ve told us.”
“Yes, my friend, what is that?”
“Where there is light, darkness cannot overcome.”
“Be that light,” Jesus exhorts, “and glorify me.”

I have the rich life full of a sinner wounded by misunderstanding and punishment but blessed by mercy and forgiveness.
