Prejudice Power Politics

How have your political views changed over time?

The key which unlocked my interest in politics happens in November 22, 1963. This is the day President John F Kennedy was assassinated. My endeavor to try and understand why someone would kill the President of the United States plunged me into asking questions about our nation and it’s role worldwide. I was thirteen.

His candidacy and his tenure enticed me to an awareness of the importance of politics. His candidacy seem to spark controversy which puzzled me causing me to observe adult behavior and pay attention to their political views.

His personal life was celebrated and even glamorized. Like so many Americans, especially the young, I was fascinated. Yet, I knew little about his politics. I think it is because of his celebrity that the assassination shocked me into questioning why and that effort included looking into more than his personal life, but also his policies.

I cannot say that I am able to answer why President Kennedy, later, his brother Robert and then, Martin Luther King were so feared and hated. I am not certain that it has that much to do with politics. I think it may have more to do with prejudice and power. Yet, I learned enough about politics to know prejudice and power for some can be the impetus of their politics even to this day.

I have the rich life full of a sinner wounded by misunderstanding and punishment but blessed by mercy and forgiveness.
