The Principal Principle

What principles define how you live?

I assume that principle in the question means those rules which govern my behavior. For decades which I have experienced a half dozen or so, I would have parroted a list of religious principles. Age and personal assessments teaches me that these are more goals to strive for than principles to live by.

Years of striving for lofty goals like the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) or perfect love as described in 1 Corinthians 13 cannot be achieved consistently by mere mortals. Instead, they reveal the character of the Trinity and were perfectly accomplished by Jesus Christ. It is a great goal to try and imitate Christ.

The principle I strive to live by is more accurately captured in Romans 12: 1 and 2. It starts with gratitude for the grace and mercies of God which Proverbs 1:7 says is the beginning of knowledge. As gratitude grows, the relationship grows and a transformation begins from a life dedicated to and dictated by limited human experiences and responses to circumstances to a better understanding of soul or spirit through yoking and yielding and identifying with God’s Spirit.

The principle summed up is the more I understand and appreciate the true nature of God, I understand who I am and why I am leading to improved responses to positive and negative circumstances and events.

I have the rich life full of a sinner wounded by misunderstanding and punishment but blessed by mercy and forgiveness.
