Count It All Joy

Describe one habit that brings you joy.

I begin by saying I almost skipped answering this prompt. Two problems, both rooted in negative connotations: One, when I think “habit,” I think bad habit; the other, confusing joy with happiness.

I had to remind myself that a habit is to act in a certain way in a specific situation. You can make something a habit or it can happen unconsciously. In the case of the habit that brings me joy, my beautiful wife and I begin each morning with a cup of coffee, conversation, and contemplating scripture.

Once we have read a scripture, read a devotional response, possibly discussed our reaction, we pray silently, personally. Of course, it is a peaceful moment void of any distractions. It does bring joy, true joy. For joy is more akin to peace than happiness.

The word translated “joy” in most, if not all English translations of the Bible comes from the Greek word “chara” (χαρά). It appears 120 times in the Bible. It is listed as one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit only preceded by “love” and followed immediately by “peace.” Chara (pronounced khar-ah’) can be defined as calm delight.

The habit that brings me joy is starting each and every day in calm delight.

“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete,” said Jesus according to John 15:11.‬‬

I have the rich life full of a sinner wounded by misunderstanding and punishment but blessed by mercy and forgiveness.
