Are you a leader or a follower?
Yes. That’s the way I will answer the question of which am I – leader or follower. Situations dictate my behavior and you can be both at the same time.
Qualified to lead
There are many circumstances and situations where I am not the most qualified person to take charge or direct others. For example, I could teach a literature or grammar class, but not of any age. I do not believe I would make a good principal, but if asked, I would try.
Both Leader and Follower
In most instances that come to mind, we are most effective being both follower and leader. Directed by leadership, a follower can lead other followers by exemplifying responsibility for achieving leadership goals; creativity in ways to move or improve; and encouragement and support to both followers and leadership.
Even leadership at some level is following someone or something. A good leader even the organizer follows someone else’s leadership style. The old adage claiming there is nothing new under the sun holds true more often than not.
“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”
Ecclesiastes 1:9 NIV
Servant Leader
The best leaders I have known are those who consider themselves as a servant leader. Their management style develops from a personal perspective that sees themselves as part of the team responsible for the wellbeing of the team members and appreciative of the value of every individual member. They serve the team but in a different role and if unsuccessful will take the biggest part of the responsibility.
“Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.””
Mark 9:35 NIV
