What makes you nervous?
I am most nervous speaking before a group of people. The size of the audience is insignificant. I seem to be most uncomfortable before a group of peers. Even when I teach or facilitate, it always takes a few moments at the beginning of each session for the heightened pulse, perspiration, and pressure to subside.
I believe the underlying reason is a strong sense of responsibility. Whether it is reading and sharing a personal creation, teaching a subject I know well, or just sharing a personal anecdote, I hope the listeners receive their expectations that satisfies their sacrifice of time and energy.
No illusions of grandeur on my part. My words do not need to move, wow, or change one completely. It is enough to present one perspective as food for thought. I do feel a strong responsibility to choose the right words and tone and eye contact to maintain attention and to be perfectly clear and above all, respectful of their time.
P.S. Heights also make me nervous.
