I walk out to the deck of a mountain cabin. There is Jesus looking out across the mountain range that surrounds us. I lean against the railing next to him. I look up and catch a gleam of wonder in his eyes.
I track the line of his sight out beyond the range and there we see a blaze of golden sunset contrasts against the darkening sky above it.
“What’s on your mind?” I ask him as he continues to stare out upon the horizon.
Jesus sighs,”One of my favorite works of art.”
We watch in silence as the sun disappears behind the vastness of mountains and timberland and eventually the horizon.
Darkness is all around but there is just enough light from stars and a small sliver of moon that we can make out the silhouettes of trees and mountain tops.
Jesus continues to take it all in with a twinkle in his eye.
Slowly, he turns to me,”What’s on your mind?”
“I’m reminded of something you’ve told us.”
“Yes, my friend, what is that?”
“Where there is light, darkness cannot overcome.”
“Be that light,” Jesus exhorts, “and glorify me.”
“I am not sure I can,” I look away, “there is still darkness in me.”
I feel his hand on my shoulder, “You have taken the first step by acknowledging your humanity.”
“So, what do you want me to do?”
“Learn of me. Abide in me. Trust me.”
“How do I be the light?”
“Learn of me. Abide in me. Trust me.”
My mind struggles to comprehend and the beauty of the sunset succumbs to darkness.
“Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”

I clear my head. Still leaning against the railing, I stare out into the dark sky. A strong arm lays gently across my shoulders. Although faintly, a tiny speck of a star twinkles. It illuminates enough sky to reveal the tops of a grove of evergreens.
“Thank you, Jesus.”
“You’re welcome, my friend.”

I have the rich life full of a sinner wounded by misunderstanding and punishment but blessed by mercy and forgiveness.
I read the above “what’s on your mind”. Is this an imaginary story?

Yes, it is a fictional story loosely based on a dream of mine. I used it like a parable to tell an earthly account to promote a biblical theme.
