The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:14 NIV)
I read the whole chapter of this above verse. I know the story. Egypt’s Pharaoh sets Israel free and then changes his mind. Why does he change his mind? He just set free thousands of slaves and he realizes how devastating this will impact Egypt. Then, as God promises Moses, God hardened Pharaoh’s heart and he calls his army together and they give chase.
Then, miracle follows miracle. God divides the night. Pharaoh and his army are under darkness. Israel have light. God slows Pharaoh’s army down by causing them to be confused. God divides the Red Sea and thousands of former slaves escape on dry ground. When Pharaoh’s army follows and everyone of the Israelites are safe on the opposite shore, God lets the sea waters loose and drown the army.
I could try to explain exactly why God chose to do the escape this way. God told Moses that it would bring more glory to God himself. I could try to explain why the Exodus account is the only historical account of the incident. According to this chapter, no Egyptian survived. I could try to explain why sometimes God miraculously provides escape and at other times allows for no escape. The Bible does say God’s ways are not our ways.
I could try and explain, but honestly, I don’ t really know. Plus, any explanation distracts from the pure, simple value of the verse. Explanations ignore an important half of the verse. What I learn from the verse are two things.
One is that God will fight for me. He might use miracles. He might use others. He may just give me a measure of his strength or a little more faith. No matter how, he will fight for me.
The other part of the lesson, he doesn’t need me. When I find myself in a situation where everything I can do is not enough, be still. Maybe I’d see more miracles if I’d just be still.
